India's pursuit of green hydrogen as a cornerstone of its energy transition represents one of the most ambitious clean energy initiatives globally. Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) aims to establish India as a hub for green hydrogen production, utilization, and export, with a target of 5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) by 2030. This would require an additional 125 GW of renewable energy capacity, attract over ₹8 lakh crore in investments, create 6 lakh jobs, and abate 50 MMTPA of CO₂ emissions. Backed by an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, the mission has made tangible strides, including incentives for electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production, pilot projects across sectors, and policy enablers like transmission charge waivers.
