The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is the primary government body responsible for the development and promotion of renewable energy in India. It formulates policies, programs, and initiatives to accelerate renewable energy deployment.

Solar Power: India has become one of the largest solar markets globally. As of April 2023, the country's total installed solar capacity surpassed 67 GW. Rajasthan is leading the position with over 17 GW installation. India has set a target to achieve 270 GW of solar capacity by 2030 under the Solar Mission.
Wind Power: India is among the top five countries in terms of installed wind power capacity. As of April 2023, the country's total installed wind capacity reached over 42 GW. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are the leading states in wind power installations. India aims to achieve 118 GW of wind capacity by 2030.
Hydro Power: India has significant hydropower potential, with a current installed capacity of around 50 GW. The state of Himachal Pradesh is known for its hydropower projects, with several large dams and run-of-the-river plants. Small hydropower projects, with a capacity of less than 25 MW, have been instrumental in electrifying remote and hilly regions.
Biomass and Bioenergy: Biomass and bioenergy play a crucial role in India's renewable energy mix. Biomass power plants and biogas plants contribute to decentralized energy generation. The MNRE promotes the usage of biomass pellets and briquettes for heating and cooking purposes, reducing dependence on traditional fuels.
Energy Transition and Targets: India has set an ambitious target of achieving 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The share of renewable energy in India's power capacity mix is expected to reach 55% by 2030, as per the National Electricity Plan. India is a signatory to the Paris Agreement and has committed to reducing its carbon intensity and increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based power generation.
International Collaborations: India has collaborated with various countries and international organizations to foster renewable energy development. Partnerships include the International Solar Alliance, the United States-India Strategic Energy Partnership, and collaborations with countries like Germany and France.
