Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) has announced a major tender for 1.5 GWh (1,500 MWh) of standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across seven substations in the state. The initiative, aimed at strengthening grid reliability and supporting renewable energy integration, will be implemented under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and is eligible for Viability Gap Funding (VGF) through the Power System Development Fund.
The tender allows for a minimum bid size of 25 MW x 4 hours (100 MWh), with bidders able to submit bids in multiples of this size, up to a maximum allocation of 175 MW / 700 MWh per bidder. The battery systems will operate on a 1.5 cycle per day charging and discharging regime, providing on-demand power injection as per dispatch instructions from the State Load Dispatch Centre.
Key dates include a bid submission deadline of December 22, 2025, and bid opening on December 23, 2025. TNGECL will provide land on a right-to-use basis at a nominal rate, and only commercially established technologies are permitted. Financial criteria require a net worth of ₹4 million per MWh and a minimum turnover of ₹5 million per MW over the last three financial years.
This tender marks a significant step for Tamil Nadu in advancing energy storage infrastructure, supporting the state’s renewable energy ambitions, and ensuring a stable and sustainable power supply for the future.
