One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG)

At the current COP26 conference, the new Global Green Grids Initiative One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) was presented as an announcement. The International Solar Alliance's OSOWOG multilateral push to encourage interconnected solar energy infrastructure on a worldwide scale has evolved into the new GGI-OSOWOG, which is an extension of that multilateral drive.

  • The goal of this project is to harness the power of the sun and ensure that its benefits are distributed without interruption across national boundaries. The objective of the effort will be to hasten the construction of massive solar power plants and wind farms in the most advantageous places, which will then be connected to one another via continental-scale grids that will traverse national borders.

The sun is a significant contributor to the human race's overall energy supply. The amount of energy that humans consume in a single hour is equivalent to the amount of energy that is transmitted from the sun to the earth in a whole year. Because the sun does not go down and because half of the earth is always exposed to sunlight, there is the potential to harvest solar energy continuously across the globe and to trade this energy across borders in order to ensure that there is sufficient energy supply to meet the needs of everyone on earth. Given these two facts, there is the potential to trade this energy across borders.

  • The One Sun Declaration has received support from over eighty countries.

  • This project will bring together national governments, financial organisations, and electricity system operators from all around the world to work together on a common goal.

  • Realizing the concept of "One Sun, One World, One Grid" through the use of interconnected green grids has the potential to be transformative. It will make it possible for all of the countries of the world to meet the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement to avert potentially catastrophic climate change, to speed up the transition to clean energy, and to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals. These efforts have the potential to drive investments in environmentally friendly technologies and to create millions of excellent employment. The nations of the world may contribute to a more wealthy and peaceful world by sharing the energy that the sun provides.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India is in the process of carrying out research in order to formulate the long-term vision, implementation strategy, roadmap, and institutional structure necessary to bring the One Sun One World One Grid initiative to fruition. The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is the organization that has been tasked with the responsibility of carrying out the study. The preliminary report was handed in 2021. It is anticipated that the study research will be completed by mid of 2023.

In 2021, a Task Force was also established by the Government of India in order to identify and investigate the numerous issues of grid interconnection in South Asia, South East Asia, the Middle East (GCC), Africa, Europe, and other regions. These regions include: South Asia, South East Asia, the Middle East (GCC), and Europe.
